Jeff Benton Homes, Incorporated (JBH) has received the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star Builder designation. Energy Star, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, recognizes builders whose homes meet stringent standards in four areas: Effective air sealing and insulation - Air leakage and improperly installed insulation can waste 20 percent or more of the energy used to heat and cool a home. Air-tight ductwork - In a typical house, 20 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poor connections. Advanced windows – Windows meeting the Energy Star standard retain as much as 67% more heat than the standard windows used in typical new-home construction. Independent testing and inspection – Each Energy Star home is inspected by an independent, EPA-certified home energy rater to verify compliance with the EPA's new and more rigorous guidelines for energy efficiency. “Building a home to these standards is no easy feat, and not every builder can do it”, says Larry Denman, a superintendent with Huntsville Utilities and a certified home energy rater. “An Energy Star homebuilder must be extremely organized, must have an outstanding management team, and must have excellent relationships with its framing, insulation, and heating and cooling subcontractors. In addition to all of this, the homebuilder must commit to an ongoing program of training and controlling the subcontractors so as to consistently meet Energy Star’s very high requirements. Jeff Benton Homes has obviously done a great job in all of these areas and certainly deserves this recognition.” |
